Graphic Novel Club – December Selection: Klaus: How Santa Claus Began

Revenge of Book Club meeting announcement for December 11th, featuring

This winter, we’re trading tinsel for battle axes.

For our final Revenge Of Graphic Novel Club meeting of the year, we’re diving into Klaus: How Santa Claus Began by Grant Morrison and Dan Mora—a wild, mythic origin story for the guy in red. Think less “mall Santa,” more “otherworldly ranger with a wolf companion and a bag full of justice.”

We’ll be meeting on Thursday, December 11, at 7 PM at Revenge Of to talk all things Klaus, myth, magic, and holiday reinvention.

What is Klaus?

Before he was Santa, he was just Klaus.

Set in a grim, wintry town where joy has been outlawed, Klaus reimagines Santa Claus as a lone, wandering hero fighting corrupt rulers and bringing wonder back to the people who need it most. Grant Morrison leans into folklore and high fantasy, while Dan Mora’s art swings between brutal and luminous—snow-dusted rooftops, eerie forests, and toy-fueled uprisings all wrapped into one gorgeous package.

It’s:

  • A holiday story without the saccharine edge
  • A fantasy adventure you can hand to your non–superhero friends
  • Perfect for readers who like their seasonal cheer with a side of rebellion

Whether you’re a longtime Morrison fan or just here for a beautifully drawn, slightly feral Santa, you’re in the right place.

How the Graphic Novel Club Works

The Revenge Of Graphic Novel Club is:

  • Open to all readers – no membership card or previous attendance required
  • Bi-monthly – we meet every other month to dig into one standout graphic novel
  • In-store and in-person – conversations, snacks, and shared nerdery encouraged

We’ve already tackled MAUS, Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, and Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done? Now we’re ending the year with something a little more mythical and a little more merry.

Tickets & Pricing

To keep the lights on (and the hot cocoa flowing), the club works like this:

  • $5 – if you purchase Klaus from Revenge Of

  • $10 – if you’re bringing your own copy from elsewhere

All tickets help us pay staff, keep the space open late, and keep hosting cool, nerdy book nights instead of turning into some boring, sensible business.

Which Edition Should I Get?

Good news: any edition of Klaus: How Santa Claus Began works for book club.

For the discussion, Volume 1 is the core text, so you’re totally set with either the hardcover or paperback of the first volume.

Complete Klaus Deluxe Hardcover Mature

If you’re the type who loves going all-in, the complete edition collects Volumes 1–3, giving you the full Klaus saga. We’ll focus on How Santa Claus Began, but there will absolutely be space for people who want to talk about the larger mythology and where the story goes.

Why We Chose Klaus for December

We wanted a winter pick that felt:

  • Festive, but not cheesy

  • Visually stunning – Dan Mora’s pages are ridiculous in the best way

  • Conversation-ready – themes of power, generosity, resistance, and how myths get made

 Klaus lets us talk about:

  • How stories reshape familiar icons (like Santa)
  • Who’s allowed to have joy, and who decides
  • Why we keep retelling holiday myths—and what it means when we flip them inside out

Plus, it’s just fun. Sometimes the best way to survive the season is to gather with other humans and talk about a Santa who would absolutely win in a boss fight.

How to Join

  1. Pick your edition – snag Klaus from Revenge Of (hardcover, paperback, or complete collection), or dust off your own copy.
  2. Grab your ticket – $5 with book purchase from us, $10 if you’re bringing your own.
  3. Mark your calendarThursday, December 11, 7 PM at Revenge Of.
  4. Show up, get cozy, and talk comics – no quizzes, no pressure, just a room full of people who also think “Viking action Santa” sounds like a good time.

If you’ve been curious about the Revenge Of Graphic Novel Club, this is a perfect entry point: one book, one night, one very intense version of Santa Claus.

See you in December!
