Revenge Of Graphic Novel Club – June 2026: Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

This June, our Graphic Novel Club leaves Earth behind for a cosmic odyssey through the far reaches of the galaxy.

We’re gathering to discuss Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s breathtaking space-faring epic. This isn't just a superhero story; it’s a gritty, gorgeous, and deeply emotional journey that feels like a classic Western set against the backdrop of a Technicolor universe. Evely’s art is a masterclass in world-building, making this one of the most visually stunning and soul-stirring adventures in modern comics.

What Is
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow?

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is a definitive reimagining that strips away the character's traditionally "bubbly" persona to explore the gritty reality of being a survivor. The story follows 21-year-old Kara Zor-El, who is feeling purposeless and adrift in the shadow of her famous cousin, until she is sought out by Ruthye Marye Knoll—a young girl on a "vicious mission" of revenge against the man who killed her father. What follows is a "cosmic space-western" heavily inspired by the novel True Grit, as the two embark on a transformative journey across the galaxy accompanied by Krypto the Super-Dog.

This series is widely celebrated for its "next level" art by Bilquis Evely and Matheus Lopes, which features an ethereal, ornate style reminiscent of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Rather than a standard superhero brawl, the book is a "thoughtful, heartbreaking" meditation on the burden of trauma and the difficulty of maintaining hope when one's foundational lessons ring hollow. It is narrated as a "folk legend" through Ruthye's eyes, providing a mythic distance that makes Supergirl feel both powerful and profoundly human.

Recognized as a modern masterpiece, the book won a Harvey Award and received nominations for both the Hugo and Eisner awards. It was named one of the best graphic novels of 2022 by outlets like Polygon and the New York Public Library, making it an ideal selection for readers looking for "real meat on the bones" of a superhero story. Whether you are a longtime fan or a newcomer who only knows Kara as "Superman's cousin," this story serves as the primary inspiration for the upcoming DC Universe film and stands as the definitive statement on the character.

How the Graphic Novel Club Works

The Revenge Of Graphic Novel Club is:

Open to all readers – no ongoing membership, come to one or come to all

  • Bi-monthly – we meet every two months to focus on a single standout graphic novel
  • In-person at Revenge Of – space to talk, question, nerd out, and discover new favorites together

Previous picks have spanned memoir, horror, and most recently, the heroic and deeply human epic of March. With Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, we’re continuing our exploration of the superhero pantheon, trading ancient myths for a cosmic odyssey while keeping our “big ideas, big art, big feelings” energy front and center.

Why We Chose Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow for June

As we kick off Year 2 of the Revenge Of Graphic Novel Club, we wanted to start this next chapter with a book that feels massive in scale but stays grounded in its emotional core. It’s the perfect blend of a "big statement" read and a summer cosmic adventure.

Supergirl gives us:

  • A Cosmic Space-Western – A gritty, frontier-style odyssey that trades horses for spaceships and desert landscapes for the vibrant, terrifying beauty of deep space.

  • Breathtaking, Ethereal Art – Bilquis Evely’s pages are a masterclass in detail; you’ll find yourself lingering on alien flora and cosmic architecture just as much as the explosive action.

  • A Story with Soul – Beneath the “super” exterior lies a deeply human exploration of trauma, resilience, and the quiet kindness that defines a true hero.

It’s a book that begs to be unpacked with other people. Together we’ll dig into:

  • How this specific journey reframes Kara Zor-El’s legacy and allows her to stand entirely apart from her famous cousin.

  • The perspective of Ruthye – Our narrator, who provides a grounded, often heartbreaking lens through which we view a "god" among the stars.

  • The visual language of the book – How Bilquis Evely and Mat Lopes create a universe that feels both hauntingly beautiful and perilously vast.
