Revenge Of Graphic Novel Club: October 2026 - Wytches

This October, our Graphic Novel Club is heading into the woods for something darker.

On Thursday, October 22nd, join us at Revenge Of as we discuss Scott Snyder and Jock’s modern horror classic, Wytches.

Built around an ancient evil lurking just beyond the tree line, Wytches takes familiar ideas about witches and folklore and twists them into something strange, visceral, and genuinely frightening. But underneath the monsters is a deeply human story about family, fear, guilt, and what we’re willing to do to protect the people we love.

And with Halloween just over a week away, we can’t think of a better time to read it.

Whether Wytches is an old favorite or you’ve never ventured into these woods before, come get scared with us.

The Rooks family is looking for a fresh start.

After leaving behind a traumatic past, Charlie and Lucy Rooks move to a new town with their teenage daughter, Sailor. But whatever they hoped to escape may be nothing compared to what awaits them there.

Something lives in the woods.

Something ancient.

Something hungry.

As Sailor becomes increasingly convinced that she is being watched, the boundaries between old fears and very real horrors begin to collapse. And the deeper the Rooks family is pulled into the mystery surrounding their new home, the more they discover that everything they thought they knew about witches was wrong.

Written by Scott Snyder and illustrated by Jock, Wytches combines supernatural horror with an intensely personal story about parents and children, trauma, guilt, and the terrifying lengths we might go to in order to protect the people we love.

Jock’s jagged, unsettling artwork and the book’s feverish colors make the world of Wytches feel unstable from the moment you enter it. Shadows become threatening. Forests become claustrophobic. And sometimes the most frightening thing on the page is simply what you think might be hiding just outside the panel.

This October, we’re going past the tree line.

You do not need to be a comics expert. You do not need to arrive with a thesis prepared. And you definitely do not need to agree with everyone else in the room.

We pick a book, read it together, and meet at Revenge Of for an open conversation about what worked, what didn’t, what surprised us, and what the story has to say.

For Wytches, we’ll have plenty to dig into: horror and folklore, parenthood, childhood fears, trauma, the visual language of the book, and the uncomfortable question at the center of it all: what would you sacrifice to protect someone you love?

Sometimes the calendar makes the decision for you.

Our October Graphic Novel Club meets just over a week before Halloween, so we knew we wanted something genuinely scary and easy to squeeze into a rapidly filling social calendar. But a good Book Club pick needs to give us more to talk about than whether or not it made us sleep with the lights on.

Wytches does both.

Scott Snyder and Jock take one of the oldest monsters in folklore and strip away almost everything familiar about it. There are no pointed hats, bubbling cauldrons, or storybook spells here. The creatures lurking in these woods feel older, stranger, and far less interested in fitting comfortably into the stories we already know.

But the horror works because the book gives those monsters something painfully human to threaten.

At its core, Wytches is about a family trying to survive the burdens they carry. It’s about a daughter who needs to know her parents believe her, a father desperate to keep his child safe, and the fear that sometimes love and protection aren't as simple as we want them to be.

That gives us plenty to discuss: how horror externalizes our anxieties, how Jock and the rest of the art team make the page itself feel dangerous, what Snyder is doing with the mythology of witches, and why the scariest parts of the story may not always be the monsters.

It also gives us the perfect excuse to spend an October night at Revenge Of talking about comics that scare the hell out of us.
